Caregiver support
The VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System offers healthcare services that are guided by the needs of veterans, their families, and caregivers. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Caregiver Support Program (CSP) provides clinical services to caregivers of eligible and enrolled veterans. The program's mission is to promote caregiver health and well-being through education, resources, support, and services.
The VA offers two programs: the Program of General Caregiver Support Services (PGCSS) and the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC). All caregivers of veterans enrolled in the VHA are eligible for the PGCSS, as long as the veteran agrees to receive care from the caregiver. To be eligible for the PCAFC, the caregiver must be at least 18 years old and be a spouse, son, daughter, parent, step-family member, extended family member, or live full-time with the veteran. The veteran must have a VA disability rating of 70% or higher and be discharged from the U.S. military.
The CSP offers a range of services, including skills training, mobile support, one-on-one coaching, group support, self-care, peer support mentoring, telephone support, online programs, and referrals to VA and community resources. Caregivers can also access health insurance (if they are otherwise uninsured), mental health counseling, monthly financial stipends, and respite care.
To enrol in the CSP, caregivers can apply online, by mail, or in person.
