The Allentown State Hospital had a long and intriguing history. It first opened its doors on October 3, 1912, as the Allentown Homeopathic Hospital for the Insane. The hospital served residents from several counties in Pennsylvania, including Lehigh, Northampton, and Carbon. The hospital's population peaked in 1954, with 2,107 patients calling the hospital home. However, over time, the number of patients at the hospital began to decline.
In November 1998, the Allentown State Hospital made history as the first psychiatric hospital in the United States to be completely seclusion-free. This meant that patients were no longer isolated or separated from the rest of the hospital community. Despite this progressive step, the hospital's occupancy continued to drop, falling to just 175 patients. This decline was partly due to the success of community mental health initiatives.
By January 2010, the patient census had dropped further to 172, and the hospital had 379 employees. The approach to mental illness treatment was evolving, and it was determined that patients could be better served by living in the community, with inpatient programs still available for those who needed them. This shift, along with economic development opportunities for the hospital campus, led to the difficult decision to close the hospital.
The Allentown State Hospital officially closed its doors on December 17, 2010, after 98 years of serving the community. The closure left a large vacant space in the Rittersville neighbourhood of East Allentown. The site was later purchased by TCA Properties in Doylestown for demolition, and parts of the 2019 movie "Glass" were filmed there before the process began. The distinctive main building, which was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, was demolished in December 2020, with a new elementary school planned to be built on the former hospital site.
