The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is a private medical school and the largest research centre in eastern Wisconsin. It was established in 1893 and is associated with Froedtert Hospital, which is considered one of the best hospitals in Milwaukee, and the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. MCW houses the Center for Infectious Disease Research and has two additional campuses, one in Green Bay and one in Wausau.
MCW is the only private medical school in Wisconsin and one of only two medical schools in the state, the other being the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. The Medical College originated with the founding of the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1893 and the Milwaukee Medical College in 1894. In 1906, Marquette College, now Marquette University, merged with the Milwaukee Medical College. In 1913, Marquette University purchased the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons, creating the Marquette University School of Medicine.
During World War II, the school developed close ties with the local Veterans Health Administration hospital in Milwaukee. In the 1950s, local philanthropist Kurtis Froedtert donated much of his estate to establish a teaching hospital, which became today's Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital. Froedtert Hospital opened in 1980 and is adjacent to MCW, serving as one of the three major affiliated health care centres where MCW students, residents, and physicians practice. MCW has more than 1,200 students enrolled in its education programs, including about 817 medical students and 400 graduate students. Additionally, 670 physicians in residency and 180 physicians in fellowship training work with the college's affiliated hospitals throughout Wisconsin.
MCW offers a holistic approach to admissions, carefully analysing each applicant's suitability for the medical profession.
