In 2016, CHRISTUS Health merged with Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics, a Catholic non-profit health system based in Tyler, Texas. This merger gave CHRISTUS Health a significant presence in East Texas. Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics was itself the product of a merger between two Catholic-based systems: Mother Frances Hospital and Trinity Clinic.
Mother Frances Hospital was founded in 1937 by the Sisters of The Holy Family of Nazareth, who came to Tyler, Texas from Chicago. The hospital was named after Frances Siedliska, the founder of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. The Sisters purchased the hospital from the City of Tyler in 1948.
Trinity Clinic, on the other hand, was founded in 1934 as The Bryant Clinic by Dr. William Howard Bryant and Dr. Sidney W. Bradford. In 1948, the clinic changed its name to The Medical & Surgical Clinic, and later merged with two other medical practices to become Trinity Clinic.
The merger between Mother Frances Hospital and Trinity Clinic in 1994 created one of the first integrated healthcare systems in the United States. This health system changed its name to Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics in 2007.
