Sacred Heart Medical Center University District: located in Eugene, Oregon
Springfield, Oregon is served by multiple hospitals, including the Sacred Heart Medical Center University District, which is located in neighbouring Eugene, Oregon. The hospital was founded as Pacific Christian Hospital by Eugene Bible University (now Bushnell University) and was dedicated on 16 March 1924. The original building was six stories tall and cost $225,000 to build.
By the 1930s, the hospital was in a poor state structurally and financially. Local physicians approached the Sisters of St. Joseph of Newark (later the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace) for help, due to their strong reputation in hospital administration in the Pacific Northwest. In 1936, the Sisters of St. Joseph purchased the hospital for $50,000 and renamed it Sacred Heart General Hospital. The building was expanded in 1941 with the addition of 100 beds, and a further 100 beds were added in 1951, bringing the total capacity to 262 beds.
In the early 2000s, the hospital needed to expand again but was unable to do so due to surrounding buildings. As a result, PeaceHealth decided to build a new facility in the Riverbend area of Springfield, Oregon. The new Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend opened in August 2008, becoming the largest hospital in the Eugene-Springfield area. Most general services were moved to this larger hospital, while the University District facility became a specialty services hospital with an emergency department.
