The history of UNC Health
The University of North Carolina Health Care system, or UNC Health, is a not-for-profit medical system owned by the State of North Carolina and based in Chapel Hill. The system was established in 1998 by the North Carolina General Assembly, which passed legislation to bring UNC Hospitals and the clinical care programs of the UNC School of Medicine under one entity.
The first hospital in what later became UNC Hospitals and the UNC Health Care System was the North Carolina Memorial Hospital, which opened on September 2, 1952. The hospital was renamed UNC Hospitals in 1989 when the North Carolina General Assembly created a unifying organization to govern its constituent hospitals.
