WellStar Atlanta Medical Center
In 1997, the hospital was sold to Tenet Healthcare and renamed Atlanta Medical Center. In 2016, it was sold again to WellStar Health System, along with four other Atlanta-area hospitals. WellStar Atlanta Medical Center was a Level I Trauma Center and an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. It housed a Neurointensive Care Unit and a Level III Neonatal ICU. The hospital provided comprehensive healthcare services, including cancer care, neurosurgery, cardiovascular services, obstetrics, critical care, and orthopedics.
In 2022, WellStar Health System announced the permanent closure of WellStar Atlanta Medical Center, which took effect on October 31, 2022. The closure was part of a redevelopment plan for the Old Fourth Ward, with the goal of reconnecting neighborhoods and restoring opportunities in the city's core. WellStar engaged The Integral Group, a nationally recognized Atlanta-based firm, to lead the redevelopment process and create spaces that reflect the community's needs, character, and history. Despite the closure of WellStar Atlanta Medical Center, WellStar Health System continues to operate various other hospitals and healthcare providers in Georgia, including WellStar Kennestone Hospital, which features the largest emergency department in the Southeastern United States.

Emory University Hospital
Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University Hospital is one of the nation's leading hospitals in several specialties. These include cardiology and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, cancer care, and solid organ and bone marrow transplants. The hospital has more than 750 licensed beds and is a quaternary care facility specialising in treating acutely ill adults.
The hospital's history dates back to 1904 when its predecessor, Wesley Memorial Hospital, was chartered with 50 beds. The hospital was initially housed in a downtown Atlanta mansion that had been spared during the Civil War. By 1922, the hospital had expanded and moved to its current location in DeKalb County on the Emory University campus. This new 275-bed facility was a gift from Asa G. Candler, the philanthropist and founder of The Coca-Cola Company. The hospital's name was changed to Emory University Hospital in the mid-1930s, honouring Bishop John Emory, who was instrumental in establishing a Methodist college in Georgia.
Emory Healthcare, the network to which Emory University Hospital belongs, includes nearly 60 urgent care and MinuteClinic locations throughout metro Atlanta and surrounding communities. Emory doctors are consistently recognised for their achievements, with many named to Atlanta Magazine's 2025 Top Doctors list. Emory Healthcare also collaborates with various organisations to promote health and wellness, such as partnering with Georgia Public Broadcasting to create an Emmy award-winning TV series on brain health.
