Memorial Hermann Health System's history
Memorial Hermann Health System is a non-profit, community-owned health system that operates in southeast Texas. It is the largest not-for-profit health system in the region, consisting of 17 hospitals, 8 Cancer Centres, 3 Heart and Vascular Institutes, 27 sports medicine and rehabilitation centres, and other outpatient and rehabilitation centres. The system has over 33,000 employees and 6,600 affiliated physicians.
The history of Memorial Hermann Health System dates back to the early 1900s with the establishment of the Memorial and Hermann healthcare systems. The Memorial Hospital System was started in 1907 by Reverend Dennis Pevoto, who purchased an 18-bed sanitarium in downtown Houston, naming it the Baptist Sanatorium. By the time he retired, the facility had expanded to a 200-bed hospital. In 1914, prominent local businessman George H. Hermann passed away, leaving a significant portion of his $2.6 million estate for building and maintaining a hospital for the poor and sick of Houston. The City of Houston annexed the site of Hermann Hospital in 1922, adding about 1,000 acres of land to the city limits.
Hermann Hospital opened in 1925 and also started a school of nursing the same year. It was the first hospital to operate in what later became the Texas Medical Center neighbourhood. In 1943, Hermann Hospital was the first in Texas to receive a shipment of penicillin, and in 1946, it performed the state's first cardiac catheterization. The hospital continued to achieve many medical firsts, including the region's first Gamma Knife acquisition in 1993 and the world's first robotic reconstructive aortic surgery in 2006.
In 1997, Hermann Hospital and the Memorial Healthcare System merged, which had five hospitals at the time. The merged entity became the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in the nation. The system has expanded and now includes hospitals and clinics in various neighbourhoods and suburbs in and around the Greater Houston area. The hospitals are distinguished by designations indicating their location, such as Texas Medical Center, Northwest, Southwest, and Woodlands.
