Las Vegas has been the site of several tragic mass casualty events, including the 2017 massacre. In the aftermath of such incidents, the focus often turns to the city's hospitals and their capacity to treat victims. Despite the population of Las Vegas and Clark County more than doubling to 2.2 million over the past 25 years, the city has just one Level I trauma center—University Medical Center—which has been the case since 1992. There are also two other lower-level trauma centers in the metro area: Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center, a Level II facility, and St. Rose Dominican Hospital, a Level III center.

Las Vegas' only Level I trauma centre
Las Vegas has experienced a rapid increase in population over the past 25 years, with the number of residents in the city and the surrounding Clark County more than doubling to 2.2 million. Despite this, Las Vegas has only one Level I trauma centre, the University Medical Center (UMC). This has been the case since 1992.
UMC is Nevada's first and only Level I Trauma Center, verified by the American College of Surgeons and designated by the state. It is also Southern Nevada's only designated paediatric trauma centre. It offers Nevada's highest level of care, providing lifesaving treatment for community members, visitors, and residents of surrounding states. Its service area includes Southern Nevada and parts of California, Utah, and Arizona.
As the only free-standing trauma centre west of the Mississippi River, UMC offers three dedicated operating rooms for trauma patients, 11 resuscitation beds, and a fully staffed Trauma Intensive Care Unit with 18 beds. The centre is staffed 24/7 by expertly trained medical professionals, including trauma surgeons, paediatric surgeons, paediatric intensive care physicians, neurosurgeons, and orthopaedic surgeons, among others.
The UMC Trauma Center is a core component of Nevada's emergency medical system. It provides 24-hour care for those with life-threatening multi-system, brain, and orthopedic injuries, as well as those at risk of multiple organ failure. The centre treats more than 12,000 patients each year.
While some have questioned the sufficiency of having only one Level I trauma centre in Las Vegas, experts suggest that the number of centres is less important than the degrees of coordination across the area's medical network, including first responders.

Two other lower-level trauma centres
Las Vegas has stirred controversy in the past over its trauma care network. The metro area includes two other lower-level trauma centres aside from the University Medical Center, which is Nevada's first and only Level I Trauma Center.
The first of these two lower-level trauma centres is the Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center in Las Vegas, a Level II facility. This centre provides highly-trained physicians, specialists, critical care nurses, and support staff available around the clock. They also offer burn care for individuals suffering from minor to severe burns. Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and Sunrise Children's Hospital have been the lead organisations for Safe Kids Clark County since 1993.
The second lower-level trauma centre is the St. Rose Dominican Hospital in nearby Henderson, Nevada, a Level III facility. It is the only Trauma Centre in the city of Henderson. The hospital has demonstrated the ability to provide prompt treatment, including emergency surgery, resuscitation, intensive care, and stabilisation of injured patients in Henderson, Las Vegas, and the surrounding areas. St. Rose Dominican is also offering a free STOP THE BLEED® training course to teach people to provide immediate bleeding control to victims at the scene of an accident.
Despite the controversy, experts have praised the trauma system in Las Vegas. According to Ian Weston, executive director of the American Trauma Society, the system worked well, crediting ambulances and first responders for their ability to triage patients to hospitals across the city.
