Community Hospital East in Indianapolis, Indiana, was founded on August 6, 1956. The hospital was built on a 28-acre site donated by farmer Edward F. Gallahue, at the corner of 16th Street and Ritter Avenue on the east side of Indianapolis. The name "Community Hospital" was chosen to reflect the involvement of the local community in fundraising for and building the hospital.
In 1982, a new satellite hospital was planned on the north side of Indianapolis. This hospital, now known as Community Hospital North, opened in 1985 and has since expanded beyond its original satellite status. Following the opening of Community Hospital North, the original hospital was renamed Community Hospital East.
Community Hospital East has undergone numerous expansions and upgrades over the years. In 1964, "The Towers," an extension to the hospital, opened, featuring a unique design with two circular towers that allowed central nursing stations to observe patients at all times. The hospital also added various specialized services, including psychiatric inpatient units, a coronary care unit, and ambulatory care.
In 1988, the Same-Day Surgery Center opened at Community Hospital East, followed by a new main lobby, entrance, and professional building in 1991. In 1996, the hospital adopted the Family Rooms concept in the maternity unit, allowing mothers and babies to stay in the same room throughout their time at the hospital.
