Three years later, in 1871, the hospital moved to a disused schoolhouse in Dyke Road, where it remained for the next 124 years. During this time, the hospital was renamed the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children, following a visit from the Prince and Princess of Wales in July 1881. In June 2007, the old Alex closed its doors and patients were transferred to a new site on Eastern Road in Brighton, next to the county hospital. The new Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital has since become a centre of excellence, offering an enhanced level of paediatric care and supporting over 45,000 children with its 100-bed facility.
