Dr. V, an ophthalmologist, was motivated by a desire to provide high-quality, affordable eye care to all and eliminate needless blindness, particularly from cataracts, a major cause of blindness in India.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the hospital averaged about 50,000 outpatient visits and 7,500 surgeries per year. To increase accessibility, Aravind established an outreach program where doctors travel to remote villages to conduct eye camps, with the support of various organisations. Aravind also began performing surgeries on a large scale, offering free or subsidised treatment for the poor, cross-subsidised by paying patients. This model of healthcare delivery was inspired by the efficiency of McDonald's fast-food service and has been widely applauded and studied worldwide.
To address the high cost of intraocular lenses (IOLs) used in cataract surgery, Aravind established Aurolab in the late 1980s.
