History and expansion of the hospital

Aravind Eye Hospital was founded in 1976 by Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy, also known as Dr. V, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The hospital started as a small 11-bed clinic in the house of Dr. V's brother, with two operating rooms. Dr. V, an ophthalmologist, was motivated by a desire to provide high-quality, affordable eye care to all and eliminate needless blindness, particularly from cataracts, a major cause of blindness in India.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the hospital averaged about 50,000 outpatient visits and 7,500 surgeries per year. To increase accessibility, Aravind established an outreach program where doctors travel to remote villages to conduct eye camps, with the support of various organisations. Aravind also began performing surgeries on a large scale, offering free or subsidised treatment for the poor, cross-subsidised by paying patients. This model of healthcare delivery was inspired by the efficiency of McDonald's fast-food service and has been widely applauded and studied worldwide.

To address the high cost of intraocular lenses (IOLs) used in cataract surgery, Aravind established Aurolab in the late 1980s. Aurolab manufactures high-quality IOLs, sutures, blades, pharmaceuticals, and equipment at a significantly lower cost, enabling Aravind to maintain quality and equity in care.

Over time, Aravind expanded beyond Madurai, opening hospitals in Theni in 1985, Tirunelveli in 1988, and Coimbatore in 1997. They also established the Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology (LAICO) in 1992, offering training for hospital administrators, operations managers, and other management professionals. In addition, Aravind set up four eye banks in association with organisations like Rotary International and Indian Overseas Bank.

Aravind continued to grow, with hospitals in Tirupur, Salem, Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Udumalaipettai, and Pondicherry, and Chennai, the largest in the chain. In 2019, they established a branch in Tirupati, providing access to eye care for 14 million people in the surrounding districts. As of 2018-2019, Aravind's outpatient visits had grown to 4.4 million, and they performed nearly 500,000 surgeries, with a focus on maintaining international standards of quality and efficiency.

Aravind Eye Hospital's impact extends beyond healthcare, showcasing the power of purpose-driven leadership and frugal innovation. With their model of compassionate and innovative care, they have revolutionised eye care in India and globally, changing the course of humanity, one sight at a time.
