AdventHealth Orlando's history and growth
AdventHealth Orlando, formerly known as Florida Hospital Orlando, is the oldest Seventh-day Adventist hospital in Florida. It was founded in October 1908 as Florida Sanitarium when Seventh-day Adventists bought a farmhouse for $9,000. It had previously been a tuberculosis sanatorium located between two lakes in the community of Formosa, north of Orlando. The sanitarium opened with 20 beds, two physicians, a dairy cattle, and four patients.
In 1973, Southern Adventist Health and Hospital Systems, Inc. was founded at Florida Hospital Orlando. This hospital network unified nine hospitals across the Southern Union Conference. In 1999, Adventist Health System, which later changed its name to Adventist Health System Sunbelt Healthcare Corporation, decided against purchasing three hospitals in the Tampa Bay area from Tenet Healthcare, which was asking for $200 to $250 million for the hospitals.
In 2015, Florida Hospital Orlando faced a Legionella outbreak in the Ginsburg Tower. The hospital hired Chicago-based Phigenics to flush the water system, which took a couple of weeks. In 2018, the hospital expanded its coronary care unit by adding eight beds and its Cardiovascular Institute with the help of a $3 million donation from the Ginsburg Family Foundation. On January 2, 2019, Florida Hospital Orlando changed its name to AdventHealth Orlando.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, AdventHealth Orlando had 1,400 beds. In 2020, the hospital hired 10,000 nurses to fill a predicted future shortage. In 2021, AdventHealth Orlando received the Pfizer vaccine and administered it to over 20,000 frontline workers in Orlando and Celebration, Florida. In 2022, the hospital bought a second helicopter, which is stationed in a 7,000-square-foot hangar at Orlando Executive Airport. In 2023, AdventHealth Orlando announced plans to add a 14-story patient and surgical tower to its campus for about $660 million, increasing the number of licensed beds at the hospital to 1,795. The tower is expected to open in 2030.
