Baylor University Medical Center (Baylor Dallas or BUMC) is a non-profit hospital in Dallas, Texas, with 1,200 licensed beds. It is one of the major centres for patient care, medical training, and research in North Texas.
The hospital was established in 1903 as the Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium in a 14-room renovated house with 25 beds. It was originally called Good Samaritan Hospital, a two-story brick house converted into a private hospital. The hospital received its charter from the state government in October 1903 and had financial support from the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The nursing school was established in 1918. In 1914, a three-story clinic building was constructed for minority patients, as segregated care was a fact of life at the time. By the 1920s, the hospital was seeing 20,000 to 30,000 patients annually.
The hospital was renamed Baylor Hospital in 1921 and then Baylor University Hospital in 1936 to emphasise its relationship with the Baptist-affiliated Baylor University in Waco, Texas. In 1950, another expansion led to the seven-story, 436-bed George W. Truett Memorial Hospital on the Baylor University Hospital Campus. The campus was renamed the Baylor University Medical Center. With this construction, Baylor became the fifth-largest general hospital in the country.
In 1959, the Florence Nightingale Maternity Hospital was replaced with a newly expanded Women's and Children's Hospital, later renamed the Karl and Esther Hoblitzelle Memorial Hospital. At this point, "medical centre" was added to the hospital's name. In 1981, the Baylor Health Care System was formally established, with Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas as its flagship hospital and corporate headquarters. The Baylor Health Care System comprised five North Texas hospitals: Baylor University Medical Center, Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation, and Baylor Medical Centres at Ennis, Garland, Grapevine, and Waxahachie.
In 2013, Scott & White merged with Baylor Health Care System to form Baylor Scott & White Health, the largest non-profit healthcare system in Texas and one of the largest in the country. Its network contains over 50 hospitals and more than 800 patient care sites.
