Some of the brothers' early emergency operations were performed on a kitchen table in a nearby farmhouse, with instruments sterilized in boiling water on a kettle stove.
In 1921, the hospital expanded, and the Beebe School of Nursing was founded. The school was accredited by the Delaware State Board of Nurse Examiners. Over the years, the Beebe Medical Center underwent numerous expansions and improvements. In 1981, a seasonal emergency room was opened in Bethany Beach, and in 1999, the emergency department was expanded. In 2007, the first cardiac surgery was performed at the medical center.
