Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC), formerly known as St. Paul's Hospital of Manila, was originally founded by the Maryknoll Sisters before World War II. The hospital was one of many structures in the Philippines that were destroyed by heavy artillery after the war. As part of a rebuilding program, the hospital received financial compensation from the US-Philippines War Damage Commission. However, due to post-war inflation, the Roman Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM), led by Archbishop Rufino Cardinal Santos, provided additional financial support for the hospital's reconstruction.
