The Department of Pathology has operational and medical oversight and sets the direction for the DUHS Clinical Laboratories. This includes overseeing clinical testing and reporting, developing quality management systems and proficiency-testing programs, providing consultation with ordering physicians, ensuring educational programs for staff, and developing strategic plans that align with the needs of patients, physicians, and the health system.
The Clinical Pathology Division of the Department of Pathology consists of 11 full-time PhD laboratory directors, 14 part-time medical directors, and five fellows. This group supports the three-part mission of the Duke School of Medicine and Duke University Health System. The Clinical Pathology division supports research by offering routine clinical services, translating and validating clinical tests, and through the individual research interests and activities of its directors.
