Hamilton Medical Center is a community hospital that has been serving the communities in Northwest Georgia for over a century. Built at a cost of $75,000, the hospital first opened as Hamilton Memorial Hospital in May 1921. It featured a Spanish-style stucco finish and a tile roof.
The hospital expanded rapidly over the next two decades to meet the needs of the rapidly growing city and region, which were fuelled by the textile and carpet industries. In 1975, noted hospital trustee Jackson P. Turner led the creation of the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation, an independent affiliate seeking private gifts for the hospital. Throughout the 1970s, the hospital continued to grow, adding new technologies and facilities to keep up with medical advancements. In 1982, the hospital was renamed Hamilton Medical Center to reflect its expanded role as a regional healthcare provider.
In 1986, Hamilton opened the Bradley Wellness Center, a comprehensive fitness, health education, and rehabilitation facility located half a block from the Medical Center. In the 1990s, Hamilton expanded its services to seniors through the development of Whitfield Place and Whitfield Commons, offering housing to low-income seniors.
In 2006, Hamilton's Board of Directors, Senior Management Team, and community members formed a strategic planning committee, which identified the need for a larger facility to meet the growing demand for services. In 2009, Hamilton opened Hamilton Convenient Care, a walk-in, no-appointment-necessary primary care clinic.
