Hendrick Medical Center's history
Hendrick Health, formerly Hendrick Medical Center, is a not-for-profit healthcare provider located in Abilene, Texas, United States. It is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and opened on September 15, 1924, as West Texas Baptist Sanitarium.
The hospital was founded by Millard A. Jenkins, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Abilene. After a proposition to build a countywide hospital in Taylor County was voted down in 1921, Jenkins joined forces with Jefferson Davis Sandefer, president of Simmons College (now Hardin-Simmons University), to form a committee of prominent Abilene residents to help realise his dream of establishing a Baptist healthcare institution.
The original facility had five floors, seventy-five beds, fireproof construction, steam heat, hot and cold running water in every room, and three elevators. Over the years, the hospital has expanded and added numerous new facilities, including critical care and pediatric intermediate care units, a skilled nursing care facility, an extended-care facility, a rehabilitation center, and a sleep disorder center. In 1977, the name was changed to Hendrick Medical Center to reflect its role as a regional healthcare facility. The Professional Center, housing physicians' offices, and the Residential Retirement Center were opened the same year.
In 2008, Hendrick announced plans for an $80 million expansion project called Project 2010, which was to be the largest expansion in the hospital's history. The project included a new four-story patient tower, new surgery facilities, a new physician office building, and a canopy-covered entrance and lobby. In 2020, Hendrick Medical Center became Hendrick Health and expanded to a three-campus system, with two campuses in Abilene and one in Brownwood.

In 2020, Hendrick Medical Center expanded to a three-campus system, including the main Hendrick Medical Center and Hendrick Medical Center South in Abilene, and Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood in Brownwood. This expansion allowed Hendrick Health to offer its comprehensive healthcare services to a wider area in the Texas Midwest region.
Hendrick Health also constructed a new six-story patient tower, a two-story garage, and completed 35,000 square feet of additional renovations. This expansion posed a unique challenge, as it was necessary to ensure that the daily critical activities of the hospital were not disrupted during the construction process. To achieve this, the exterior skin of the hospital was removed, and a curtain wall system with glass and porcelain panels was installed, allowing the new structure to be built within close proximity to the existing one.
