Lafayette Charity Hospital was the largest hospital in Lafayette
The Lafayette Charity Hospital was located at 311 West St. Mary Boulevard in Lafayette, Louisiana. It was a state-owned teaching hospital that opened on September 29, 1938, to provide free medical care for the poor and indigent population of southwest Louisiana and the Heart of Acadiana. The hospital was the largest in Lafayette, with 325 beds out of a total of 425 beds available in the city at the time.
The hospital was first housed in the St. John's Hospital on St. Mary and later moved to a new campus at the intersection of Bertrand Drive and Congress Street in 1982. The original building on St. Mary Blvd was demolished in January 1984.
During its early years, the hospital quickly reached capacity and "officials estimated that nearly 5,000 needy people would have gone untreated were it not for the state hospitalization plan". In 1950, a 104-bed, $1,200,000 Tuberculosis Unit was established as an annex, serving as a referral center for eleven Louisiana parishes. The hospital also ranked third among state hospitals for the number of births in 1949-50.
In 1967-68, the hospital treated 6,473 inpatients, 62,566 outpatients, performed 3,700 surgeries, and oversaw 3,359 births. The hospital's emergency room was open 24 hours a day and treated approximately 50,000 patients annually.
Despite being an outmoded facility, Lafayette Charity Hospital provided modern medical care and served as a safety net for the indigent population during its 44 years of operation from 1938 to 1982. It was replaced by the University Medical Center (UMC) at a nearby site, continuing the state's charity hospital system.
