Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center was a 303-bed full-service community teaching hospital located in the East Flatbush neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York. The hospital was made up of eight conjoined buildings dispersed over a 366,000 square foot city block. It was the nation's largest voluntary hospital for chronically ill patients, treating a wide range of conditions, including cancer, arthritis, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy. The hospital also had medical research laboratories and a tumour detection clinic. In the 1960s, the hospital became the site of a controversial experiment when virologist and cancer researcher Chester M. Southam, along with his colleague Emanuel Mandel, injected HeLa cancer cells into elderly patients without their consent. This led to a public lawsuit and resulted in the suspension of Southam and Mandel's medical licenses for a year, although they were ultimately placed on probation instead.
In 2010, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center attained corporate status, becoming a separate entity from the David Minkin Rehabilitation Institute/Rutland Nursing Home. This change reduced the number of beds at the hospital from 864 to 326, with the remaining beds going to the affiliated rehabilitation institute and nursing home. The merger with Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center
The merger was announced in January 2018 by Governor Andrew Cuomo, who also announced that One Brooklyn Health System (OBHS) was awarded $664 million in capital funding from the NYS Department of Health’s Health Care Facilities Transformation Program: Kings County project.
