History and background
Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) is a teaching hospital in California's Inland Empire region. It was opened in 1905 and is a level-1 trauma centre with over 1,000 beds. The main tower of the centre was built in 1967 and is 9 stories high. The new towers, built in 2021, are 16 stories tall, making them one of the tallest buildings in the Inland Empire.
The history of Loma Linda University goes back to the early 1900s. In 1905, the American Medical Association formed a national Council on Medical Education. The following year, Dr. Nathan Porter Colwell became its first secretary. In 1906, The Loma Linda College of Evangelists was established, with courses including Religion, General, Industrial, and Nursing/Medical. In 1907, the first Loma Linda nurse commencement was held. The school was chartered as a Medical College in 1909. In 1910, the Seventh-day Adventist Yearbook entered the school as 'Loma Linda College', adding the legal title, 'College of Medical Evangelists of Loma Linda' (CME). From 1913 to 1962, the university taught basic sciences in Loma Linda but sent its students to Los Angeles for clinical experience. During World War II, the CME sponsored the 47th General Hospital. In 1961, college leaders voted to convert the institution to a university, renaming it after the city and consolidating all science and clinical faculties within Loma Linda by 1962.
In 1967, the university opened the Loma Linda University Medical Center, with more than 125 patients from the old community hospital. The university also operated the Seventh-day Adventist liberal arts college in Riverside from 1967 to 1990, now known as La Sierra University. In 1980, the state designated LLU as the only Level I trauma centre in San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo, and Mono counties, comprising more than a fourth of the state's land mass. In 1991, B. Lyn Behrens became the first female president of LLU. In 1993, the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital was completed, adding nearly 900 beds for patient care.
Loma Linda University has grown into a health-sciences university and medical centre known for advanced technology, service-oriented medical care, and education. It is recognised by an independent accrediting agency for excellence in education, including its commitment to local and global service, graduation rates, and new alumni success. The university admits more than 33,000 inpatients and serves roughly half a million outpatients annually. It is the only tertiary-care hospital in the area and operates some of the largest clinical programs in the United States, including neonatal care and outpatient surgery. It is also recognised as the international leader in infant heart transplantation and proton treatments for cancer.
