Miami Valley Hospital's history
Miami Valley Hospital, located in Dayton, Ohio, has a long history of serving the community that dates back to the late 19th century. In the 1890s, Dayton's population was growing, and the city lacked sufficient medical care facilities. At that time, the most advanced treatment available was medicine made from bark and roots. To address this need, Rev. Carl Mueller, a minister at St. John's German Evangelical Lutheran Church (now known as St. John United Church of Christ), helped form the Protestant Deaconess Society in 1890 with the mission to "aid the sick and the needy."
The first hospital, known as the Protestant Deaconess Hospital, opened in a converted private home, the Adam Pritz residence, on 7 East Fourth Street in downtown Dayton. It had 37 beds and was staffed by seven physicians who created remedies with herbs, roots, barks, and vegetables. The hospital was supported by donations from the community, including food items such as beef, barrels of apples, jams, soap powder, and potatoes. In 1894, a new hospital building was dedicated along Main Street, with 150 beds and a separate surgical suite. The average cost of treatment was 74 cents per patient per day, and a private room cost five dollars a week.
Over the years, the hospital expanded and advanced its care offerings. In 1903, the hospital formally changed its name to Miami Valley Hospital. In 1912, Dayton's first emergency room was opened beneath the main surgery floor, and outpatient clinics were established in 1913 following a flood. The hospital continued to grow and evolve, with the establishment of the Radioisotope Laboratory in 1952, the introduction of cardiac catheterization in 1957, and the first open-heart surgery performed in 1968.
Today, Miami Valley Hospital is a large urban hospital with multiple campuses and over 7,000 employees. It is recognized for its clinical excellence and has received numerous awards.
