At the time of its founding, hospitals in New York City discriminated against Jewish people by refusing to hire Jewish doctors or nurses and prohibiting Jewish patients from being treated in their wards. The hospital was founded by Orthodox Jewish philanthropist Sampson Simson (1780-1857) and was the second Jewish hospital in the United States, after the Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, which was established in 1847.
The hospital was originally called the Jews' Hospital and was built on land donated by Simson on West 28th Street in Manhattan, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. It opened in 1855 with 45 beds and, although it was a sectarian institution, it accepted emergency patients of all religious affiliations. During the Civil War, the hospital expanded to accommodate Union soldiers and, in 1866, it formally abandoned its sectarian charter to reflect its broadened mission and ensure eligibility for state and city support.
In 1866, the hospital changed its name to Mount Sinai Hospital to reflect its new-found role as an integral part of the general community. In 1872, the hospital moved uptown to the east side of Lexington Avenue between East 66th and 67th streets. The institution established relationships with many prominent physicians, including Abraham Jacobi, known as the father of American paediatrics.
