MD Curriculum
NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers an innovative, flexible MD degree curriculum known as the Curriculum for the 21st Century: Personalized Pathways, or C21. The program enables students to master the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career in medicine, with opportunities to customize their studies at designated points in their training.
The three-year MD pathway allows students to complete their MD degree through three concentrated stages of foundational basic science concepts combined with foundational clinical skills. This is followed by a clerkship year combined with integrated clinical skills, and completed with individualized exploration in specialty and subspecialty areas of interest and advanced clinical skills. During the clerkship year, students reinforce concepts through daily patient contact, online and simulation exercises offered at NYSIM, the New York Simulation Center for Health Sciences, and progress assessments.
In phase one, all students progress through the first 46 instructional weeks of medical school on the same timeline. They participate in longitudinal courses concurrently with organ systems courses. Phase two sees students spend 45 weeks in core clerkship training at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island and ambulatory care training sites. Here, students develop core clinical skills and consolidate medical knowledge to prepare for advanced training in phase three. They participate in core clerkships in internal medicine, neurology/rehabilitation medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, primary care, psychiatry, and surgery, as well as a core rotation in anesthesia and pain management and two weeks of elective study.
Phase three begins with structured independent learning courses to prepare for the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and 2 examinations. Students then spend 35 weeks completing longitudinal educational experiences, including a capstone project for HSS. They also complete a clinical rotation in the emergency room and a critical care medicine (ICU) rotation, as well as a subinternship, or advanced clerkship, in either internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, or surgery. There are 12 weeks of elective time, and phase three culminates in a transition to residency course.
