The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) is a 965-bed hospital with campuses in New Brunswick (Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick) and Somerville, New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset). It is the flagship hospital of the RWJBarnabas Health System.
The hospital was founded as the New Brunswick City Hospital in 1884 or 1885. In 1888 or 1889, the name was changed to the John Wells Memorial Hospital. In 1916, the hospital was expanded and renamed Middlesex General Hospital. In 1958, an addition to the hospital was built, housing New Jersey's first vascular lab, an intensive care unit, a cardiopulmonary lab, a thirteen-room operating suite, and 287 more beds.
In 1986, the hospital was renamed Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital after Robert Wood Johnson II, the former president and chairman of Johnson & Johnson. Johnson was a firm believer in the corporate system who promoted radical policies of employee support and empowerment. During the Second World War, he served as a colonel and later a brigadier general, running the Smaller War Plants Corporation.
In 2014, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Somerset Medical Center merged. In 2015, Barnabas Health and Robert Wood Johnson Health System signed an agreement to merge. In 2016, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital became part of RWJBarnabas Health after a merger between Robert Wood Johnson Health System and Barnabas Health.
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital has received national acclaim for its clinical quality and patient safety.
