Scott and White Memorial Hospital became a non-profit in 1949
Scott and White Memorial Hospital, established by Arthur Carroll Scott and Raleigh R. White in 1904, became a non-profit hospital foundation in 1949. The hospital, first called Temple Sanitarium, was initially set up in a converted house and was soon moved to a former Catholic convent. Over the 59 years that the hospital occupied this location, it expanded into a collection of 31 buildings. In 1922, 18 years after its founding, the hospital was renamed Scott and White Hospital.
Raleigh White passed away in 1917, and Arthur Scott remained at the hospital until his death in 1940. On December 23, 1949, the hospital was officially converted into a non-profit foundation. In December 1963, the hospital moved to its current location, where it has grown into a leading teaching hospital and a prominent centre for medical research. It is now the only Level I Trauma Centre between Dallas and Austin.
