Known as the District Memorial Hospital of Southwestern North Carolina, Inc., it was also referred to simply as District Memorial Hospital, District Hospital, or the Andrews Hospital. This 64-bed hospital was located in the hospital district of Valleytown Township, Clay County, and Graham County.
The idea for the hospital was first proposed in the 1954 edition of the Cherokee Scout, and it was constructed with a combination of federal, state, and local funds, as well as money raised by district residents. The hospital opened in 1956 as a 30-bed facility, and over time, it expanded to accommodate more patients. By 1970, the number of beds had increased to 50, and another expansion that year added a two-story wing and brought the total number of beds to 64.
The name "District Memorial Hospital" honoured the hospital district it served and paid tribute to those who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War through a memorial plaque. The hospital also had an internal medicine facility, which was founded in 1992 and operated until 2006, when it moved to a new facility near Andrews Middle School.
Unfortunately, financial troubles led to the hospital's closure in 2003, and the building was demolished a few years later. Today, the site is an empty field, but the surrounding trees were preserved during the demolition process.
