Providence Hospital's history

Before the 20th century, Waco, Texas, had a home-based medical system, with doctors travelling to houses or hotels to treat patients. However, the inadequacy of these facilities became apparent when a patient had to be transferred to New Orleans for treatment. Dr. James W. Hale, with the support of the Waco Business Mens Club, requested aid from the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul to establish a hospital in Waco. Construction began in 1903, and in November 1904, three Sisters from Maryland began treating the sick locally. On 19 December 1904, they admitted their first patient—a young boy suffering from malnutrition. Waco's first hospital, Provident Sanitarium (later renamed Providence Hospital), officially opened on 11 January 1905.

Founded on a commitment to serve the suffering, sick, and poor, the Daughters of Charity operated a range of medical facilities across the country. Providence Hospital in Waco soon opened a nursing school, with its first student graduating in 1908. Over its 54 years of operation, the school educated nearly 750 nurses before closing in 1960. Initially staffed by only four Sisters, the hospital cared for an estimated 230 patients in its first year of service.

Over the years, Providence Hospital has remained dedicated to providing excellent healthcare through modern facilities and technology, undergoing several expansion projects. In 1973, the original hospital buildings were torn down to make way for new, modernised medical centres. Today, Ascension Providence Hospital in Waco is a full-service hospital, delivering 24/7 emergency care and specialty care in areas such as heart and vascular health, orthopaedics, women's health, and maternity services. The hospital has been recognised as a Primary Stroke Centre and a Level II Stroke Centre, the highest level of recognition in Texas.
