Cleveland Clinic's history
The Cleveland Clinic was established in 1921 as a group surgical-medical practice with its own dedicated hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. The idea for the clinic was conceived by four Cleveland physicians, three of whom had served together in the Lakeside Unit, a World War I medical-surgical unit attached to the British Army Medical Hospital near Rouen. The three surgeons, George W. Crile, Frank E. Bunts, and William E. Lower, were inspired by the teamwork and efficient organization they experienced in military medicine and wanted to establish a similar group practice in Cleveland. They recruited John Philips, an internist and pediatrician, to join them as the fourth founder.
The four founders purchased land at the corner of Euclid Avenue and E. 93rd Street in Cleveland and constructed a four-story building with outpatient clinics, inpatient hospitalization, and a medical laboratory. The building was dedicated at a private ceremony on February 26, 1921, and the Cleveland Clinic opened its doors to the public on February 28, 1921, registering 42 patients. By April 1921, the Cleveland Clinic had a staff of 60 employees, including 14 physicians and four nurses.
In the following years, the Cleveland Clinic continued to expand. In 1924, a 184-bed hospital was added to the outpatient facilities. However, on May 15, 1929, a tragic fire, known as the Cleveland Clinic Disaster, occurred when nitrate-based x-ray films ignited in the basement, releasing poisonous fumes that killed 123 people, including Dr. Phillips. Despite this setback, the Cleveland Clinic persevered and resumed patient care services just five days later.
After World War II, the Cleveland Clinic rose to become one of the nation's leading medical centers, focusing on specialized medicine. It became known for its advancements in heart surgery, setting national records for heart and lung transplants and performing pioneering procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting. The Cleveland Clinic also made significant contributions in other areas, including the first successful larynx transplant, the discovery of coronary angiography, and the identification of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Today, the Cleveland Clinic operates one of the nation's largest postgraduate medical education programs and continues to be ranked among the top hospitals in the United States. It has expanded beyond Cleveland, with locations in Florida, Nevada, and even globally in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The Cleveland Clinic's history is a testament to its founders' vision of providing "better care of the sick, investigation of their problems, and more education of those who serve."
