Long Beach, California
Long Beach has a rich history, with Indigenous people having lived in the coastal Southern California region for over 10,000 years. By the 16th century, when Spanish explorers arrived, the dominant group was the Tongva, who had established several settlements within the present-day city. Debra was also diagnosed with breast cancer when Jennette was three years old, and she underwent several surgeries, chemotherapy, and a bone marrow transplant. Despite her illness, Debra pushed Jennette into acting and was insistent that she pursue a career in the field. Debra was also controlling and abusive towards Jennette, even wiping her behind because she didn't trust her to do it properly and performing invasive ""breast and 'front butt' exams" on her.
Debra's cancer diagnosis and treatment significantly impacted Jennette's childhood. She describes her earliest memories as being "very weighted in tragedy" due to her mother's illness. Debra's hoarding also contributed to the family's living situation, with Jennette and her brothers sleeping on gymnastic mats in the living room because their bedrooms were filled with clutter.
