Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK or MSKCC) is a cancer treatment and research institution in Manhattan, New York City. It is one of 72 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and is ranked second in the US for cancer care. The center was formed in 1980 from the merger of the Memorial Hospital for the Treatment of Cancer and Allied Diseases, founded in 1884, and the adjacent Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, founded in 1945. The two institutions had been coordinating their operations since 1960.
The Memorial Hospital was founded in 1884 as the New York Cancer Hospital by a group that included John Jacob Astor III and his wife, Charlotte. In 1934, John D. Rockefeller Jr. donated land on York Avenue for the hospital's new location and granted the hospital $3 million (equivalent to $68 million in 2024) to fund the move. The Memorial Hospital officially reopened at its new location in 1939. In 1945, the chairman of General Motors, Alfred P. Sloan, donated $4 million (equivalent to $69.9 million in 2024) to create the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, which was built adjacent to Memorial Hospital.
The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has been at the forefront of cancer research and treatment. From the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, Chester M. Southam conducted pioneering clinical research on virotherapy and cancer immunotherapy at MSK, though his research was conducted without the patients' informed consent. In 1963, some doctors objected to the lack of consent and reported him to the Regents of the University of the State of New York. Southam was found guilty of fraud, deceit, and unprofessional conduct. MSK was one of the first cancer centers to receive the Comprehensive Cancer Center designation from the NCI in 1971. The center's doctors work closely with scientists to fulfill the institution's commitment to patient care, research, and education. MSK's experts have established standards of care and treatment protocols for each type and stage of cancer, offering a full range of programs to support patients and their families throughout all phases of treatment.
The center's main campus is located at 1275 York Avenue between 67th and 68th Streets in Manhattan, with other locations in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, and New Jersey. The New York Proton Center, a partnership between Memorial Sloan Kettering, Montefiore Health, and Mount Sinai Health System, opened in 2019 as the first proton therapy center in New York state. The David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center opened in January 2020, and the center launched its India facility in Chennai in August 2022, providing telemedicine services.
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has received numerous accolades and rankings. It has been ranked second in the US for cancer care and first in the Northeast by US News & World Report. Newsweek ranked the center second in the world for oncology in 2025, and it was also ranked among the top 10 smart hospitals in the world in 2025. MSK's physicians have also been recognised, with two MSK physician-scientists, Andrea Cercek and Vinod Balachandran, named to the 2025 TIME100 Health list of the 100 most influential individuals in health.
