History of Alameda Hospital
Alameda Hospital, located on Alameda Island in California, United States, was founded in 1894. Before the hospital was established, care for the sick and injured in Alameda was provided in physician offices, and surgeries were often performed on kitchen tables. The nearest hospitals for the most serious cases were in neighbouring Oakland.
In 1893, registered nurse Kate Creedon believed that the citizens of Alameda deserved better medical facilities and treatment. With the support of two physicians practising in Alameda, Creedon's employer Dr. George Perry Reynolds and Dr. William Barclay Stephens, plans were made to develop a hospital in Alameda. In 1894, Alameda Hospital opened its doors to patients in what was formerly the six-bed Alameda Sanatorium on San Jose Avenue. The hospital was an immediate success and quickly saw a growing demand for its services. By 1900, the hospital had relocated to a larger building on Clinton Avenue, initially as a 20-bed facility, and later expanding to 40 beds.
In 1911 and 1913, additional properties were purchased on Clinton Avenue for future development, and in 1924, a modern fireproof building was constructed. This building remains in use today as a location for physician offices and administrative functions. In 1927, Kate Creedon died suddenly of pneumonia, and the hospital faced financial pressures during the Great Depression. Despite several reorganisations, foreclosure loomed in 1939. However, a group of businessmen and physicians successfully bid for the hospital, keeping its doors open.
In 1983, the most significant expansion of hospital facilities occurred with the dedication of a 62,000-square-foot South Wing. In 1987, a short-stay surgery unit and a new emergency department were added, and in 1989, a skilled nursing facility was constructed, now known as the South Shore Rehabilitation facility.
In 2002, Alameda Hospital became a district hospital with the formation of the Alameda Health Care District, approved by voters. Until this point, it had been a private non-profit hospital. However, by 2013, the hospital was facing financial difficulties and was taken over by the county-affiliated Alameda Health System (AHS), formerly known as the Alameda County Medical Center.
