It was founded in 1902 by James Bowen Funsten, the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Idaho, with $25,000 from the National Episcopal Church. Originally, St. Luke's was a 6-bed facility in a converted 2-story house at the corner of 1st and Bannock Streets. However, the hospital immediately began to expand, with the construction of a contagious disease annex. In 1903, plans for a new, larger hospital were drawn up by the architecture firm Tourtellotte & Co. The new building, completed in 1903, was a 3-story brick and stone structure capable of treating 25 patients. It included sleeping quarters for nurses and a nurses' training school.
Over the years, St. Luke's continued to expand to meet the growing needs of the community. In 1906, Wayland & Fennell designed a 3-story wing addition, with plans for a future second wing. A 9-bed children's hospital was constructed adjacent to the main buildings in 1910. By 1926, the hospital was caring for 2005 patients within facilities constructed in 1906, prompting the construction of a new main hospital building. In 1928, St. Luke's opened a new 4-story building at the corner of 1st and Bannock Streets, adding 67 beds.
St. Luke's continued to face challenges with overcrowding. In 1947, there was an increase in patients with polio, leading to another expansion effort. St. Luke's and its neighbouring hospital, St. Alphonsus, initiated the United Hospital Fund Campaign, aiming to construct new 100-bed facilities at both hospitals. Despite raising over $300,000, funds were insufficient for new construction until 1950 when construction finally began on a new wing.
