Johns Hopkins, the university's namesake, was a Quaker. He was born on May 19, 1795, at his family's 500-acre tobacco plantation in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Hopkins was the second of eleven children. At the age of 17, he left the plantation to work in his uncle's Baltimore wholesale grocery business. While living with his uncle's family, Hopkins fell in love with his cousin, Elizabeth. However, due to the Quaker taboo against the marriage of first cousins, neither Hopkins nor Elizabeth ever married.
After gaining experience in his uncle's business, Hopkins went into business with Benjamin Moore, a fellow Quaker. However, the partnership was later dissolved due to Hopkins' focus on capital accumulation. Hopkins then partnered with three of his brothers and established Hopkins & Brothers Wholesalers in 1819. They became highly successful suppliers of tobacco and other provisions. Hopkins also sold corn whiskey under the label "Hopkins' Best," which led to his temporary expulsion from the Quakers.
Hopkins was a successful entrepreneur and became a millionaire banker. He was known for his philanthropy, particularly his support for the poor and newly freed slave populations. On his death in 1873, Hopkins bequeathed $7 million (equivalent to $162 million in 2023) to fund a hospital and university in Baltimore, which became known as Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University.
