History
Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) is a teaching hospital in California's Inland Empire region. It first opened in 1905 and is a Level 1 trauma centre with over 1,000 beds. The main tower of the centre was built in 1967 and is 9 stories high. The new towers, built in 2021, are 16 stories high and are among the tallest buildings in the Inland Empire.
Loma Linda University Medical Center was founded as Loma Linda Sanitarium in 1905 by John Burden, one of the founders of Loma Linda, and other members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Ellen G. White, an Adventist pioneer, first visited Loma Linda and described it as "the most desirable place I have ever seen for a sanitarium". The asking price of $110,000 was too high for the fledgling church, but the price continued to drop and the property was eventually purchased for $38,900. On August 26, 1905, Loma Linda Sanitarium was incorporated, and on October 13, the first two patients were admitted. In December 1905, Loma Linda accepted its first nursing students, and on July 10, 1907, the first nurse commencement was held.
The present 11-story Loma Linda University Medical Center opened on July 9, 1967, replacing the original Sanitarium. With the completion of Loma Linda University Children's Hospital in 1993, the number of beds available for patient care increased to nearly 900, including beds at Loma Linda University Medical Center East Campus and Loma Linda University Behavioral Medicine Centre.

Bailey transplanted a baboon heart into Baby Fae, an infant born with a severe heart defect.
