The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the oldest orthopedic hospital in the United States, was founded in 1863 by Dr. James Knight. It was originally known as The Hospital of the New York Society for the Relief of the Ruptured and Crippled. The hospital was founded as a philanthropic endeavour to provide medical care to injured Civil War soldiers and needy city residents.
Dr. Knight was a general practitioner from Maryland. He offered to lease his private residence at 97 Second Avenue, furnished with 28 inpatient beds for children and a conservatory to make braces, for $1,200 a year. Adults were treated as outpatients. The poor were treated for free, while others were charged a moderate fee. Knight was appointed Resident Physician and Surgeon and lived in the hospital with his family.
The hospital's first patient was a four-year-old boy with paralysis, admitted on May 1, 1863. Soon, the hospital's patient population outgrew its facilities, and the need for a larger institution was recognised. Funds were raised, land was purchased, and a new building was constructed. In 1870, the hospital moved to its second site on the corner of Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street. This newly constructed building was designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter, a specialist in ecclesiastical architecture, and the interior was planned by Dr. Knight.
