Alton Ochsner, born on May 4, 1896, in Kimball, South Dakota, was an American surgeon and medical researcher. He graduated with an MD degree from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1920 and began his training in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital in the same city. He later completed a 16-month surgical residency under his uncle, Dr. A. J. Ochsner, who was the founder and president of the American College of Surgeons. Alton Ochsner trained for two years in Germany and Switzerland before developing a clinical practice in Chicago. He then joined the University of Wisconsin as an assistant professor of surgery due to his interest in education and research.
In 1927, Alton Ochsner arrived in New Orleans and assumed the chairmanship of the Department of Surgery at Tulane University. He became renowned for his intense verbal cross-examinations of his medical students and residents, believing that this prepared them to perform well under stress. He also organized surgical teaching programs at New Orleans Charity Hospital, providing clinical opportunities for himself and his students. Ochsner was among the first to recognize the association between tobacco and lung cancer, and he established the Ochsner Clinic in 1942, pioneering the "war against smoking."
Over his lifetime, Dr. Alton Ochsner trained numerous surgeons and emphasized teaching and research, which became his legacy. He also had a long relationship with various U.S. government agencies and was involved in conservative politics, primarily within the Republican Party. He passed away in 1981 at the age of 85.
