What You'll Learn

History
HCA Florida Capital Hospital, formerly known as Capital Regional Medical Center, is a 266-bed acute-care hospital located in Tallahassee, Florida. The hospital has been serving the Big Bend community for over 40 years, providing a wide range of healthcare services.
The history of the hospital began in 1974 when Jim Tully, a real estate agent, purchased a ten-acre parcel of land with the vision of building a new hospital. At the time, there was a significant wait for non-emergency surgery at the existing Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, which could be up to six weeks. Tully organized a group of doctors and investors who successfully applied for a Certificate of Need (CON) from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, a crucial permit for establishing a new medical facility. The land and CON were then sold to Nashville's General Care Corporation, which owned several other hospitals. The future hospital was initially known as the Jim Tully Center during its construction.
In September 1979, the $7 million facility opened its doors as the Capital Medical Center, providing much-needed healthcare services to the community. Unfortunately, Jim Tully did not live to see the hospital's opening, as he passed away in 1978 at the age of 50. In 1980, the General Care Corporation was purchased by HCA Healthcare, marking the beginning of significant growth and expansion for the hospital.
Over the years, the hospital underwent several name changes and expansions. In January 1982, it became the HCA Tallahassee Community Hospital, and in 1986, it opened a cardiac catheterization lab following an $11 million expansion project. In 2001, plans were announced for a new $100 million replacement hospital, which opened in 2003 as the Capital Regional Medical Center, reflecting its new location adjacent to the original site. This new facility continued the tradition of high-quality, expanded medical care that Jim Tully had envisioned.
In recent years, the hospital has continued to grow and enhance its services. In 2016, the Capital Regional Medical Center expanded its behavioral health services and announced the completion of a $1.4 million physician practice in North Tallahassee. Between 2019 and 2022, the hospital opened several freestanding emergency rooms, including the Southwood ER and the Lake Jackson ER. In 2021, construction began on a $23 million Inpatient Rehabilitation Center, which opened in 2022, along with a 20-bed Inpatient Rehabilitation Center and a 10-bed Level II NICU.
Today, HCA Florida Capital Hospital is a fully accredited healthcare facility with over 1,100 employees and 500 physicians. It offers a comprehensive range of services, including emergency care, a bariatric center, cancer center, heart and vascular center, orthopedic center, and more. The hospital remains committed to providing advanced healthcare services with a patient-focused approach to the Tallahassee community.
