Sentara's history
Sentara Health is a not-for-profit integrated healthcare system that serves Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. Sentara's story began in 1888 when a small facility that would become Sentara Norfolk General Hospital opened. This forerunner hospital provided healthcare to communities with limited access to it. Many served patients regardless of their ability to pay for their care.
In 1972, Norfolk General Hospital and Leigh Memorial Hospital merged to create the corporation that would become Sentara Healthcare. This marked Sentara's transformation from a hospital organization into an integrated healthcare system, offering a broader range of services to the community. The newly merged entity constructed a new 250-bed Leigh Memorial Hospital in 1977, relocating to its current location on Kempsville Road. In 1981, the nation's first baby born using in vitro fertilization, Elizabeth Carr, was delivered at Norfolk General Hospital.
In 1983, the organization changed its name from Medical Center Hospitals to Alliance Health System. The following year, they began offering the Optima Health Plan HMO. In 1987, the corporation adopted the name "Sentara Health System," later shortened to "Sentara Health." The names of its properties, including the two main hospitals and multiple medical care facilities, were also rebranded. In 1988, Hampton General Hospital joined the Sentara system, and in 1989, doctors at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital performed the region's first successful heart transplant.
Sentara continued to expand through mergers and acquisitions, including the purchase of the Humana Bayside Hospital in 1991 and partnerships with Williamsburg Community Hospital in 1996 and Tidewater Health Care in 1998. In 2002, Sentara took full ownership of the Williamsburg Community Hospital, and it became the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. Sentara has continued to innovate, becoming the first in the nation to employ "eICU" services in 1999 and launching virtual nursing at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in 2024, with plans to expand this system to all 12 Sentara hospitals.
