History of Lenox Hill Hospital
Lenox Hill Hospital (LHH) is a 450-bed, non-profit, acute care facility on Manhattan's Upper East Side. It was founded in 1857 as the German Dispensary, serving the predominantly German population living in the nearby immigrant neighbourhood of "Little Germany" in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. By 1868, the facility had relocated to the neighbourhood of Park Avenue and East 77th Street, occupying its present site since 1869 when it was known as the German Hospital.
In 1918, the hospital was renamed Lenox Hill Hospital, tying it to the Lenox Hill section of the Upper East Side and distancing the institution from America's enemy, Germany, during World War I. The hospital has a long history of innovation, establishing the first physical therapy department in the country in 1907 and performing the first angiocardiograph in 1938. In 1955, Lenox Hill Hospital opened one of the first cardiac catheterisation laboratories in New York City.
In 2007, the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital was incorporated into Lenox Hill Hospital, and in 2010, the hospital joined Northwell Health. Today, Lenox Hill Hospital is known for its inpatient medical, surgical, obstetric, paediatric, and psychiatric services, serving over 325,000 patients each year. The hospital has earned an international reputation for outstanding patient care and innovative treatments and has been recognised as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals for four consecutive years (2022-2025).
