History of the hospital
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a paediatric treatment and research hospital located in Memphis, Tennessee. It was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas on 4 February 1962, in front of a crowd of 9,000 people.
Danny Thomas had a simple goal as a young man: to entertain people and be successful enough to provide for his family. However, work was hard to come by, and his despair grew as he and his family struggled. One night, in a Detroit church, he turned to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, and prayed: "Show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine." Soon after, he began to find work, eventually becoming one of the biggest stars of radio, film, and television. He starred on 'Make Room for Daddy', later known as The Danny Thomas Show.
Thomas used his fame to fulfil his vow to St. Jude Thaddeus, and in 1955, he and a group of Memphis businessmen decided to build a hospital. They wanted it to be more than a general children's hospital, as the survival rate for childhood cancers was only 20% at the time. They envisioned St. Jude as a unique research institution where the world's best doctors and scientists would work together to cure childhood cancer, sickle cell, and other deadly diseases. Thomas also wanted to remove the burden of treatment costs so that families could focus on their children.
To fund the hospital's construction and annual operation, Thomas turned to his fellow Americans of Arabic-speaking descent, believing that by supporting St. Jude, this group could thank the United States for the freedoms given to their parents and honour their forefathers who had immigrated to America. In 1957, 100 representatives of the Arab-American community formed ALSAC (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities), which has been responsible for the hospital's fundraising efforts ever since.
Since its opening, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has grown into a world-renowned research institution, leading the way in understanding, treating, and defeating childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. It has earned numerous clinical and scientific achievements and is the first and only cancer centre solely focused on paediatric cancer to be designated a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Centre.
