Advocate Aurora Health's merger with Atrium Health
Advocate Aurora Health (AAH) is a non-profit, faith-based hospital network with headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Downers Grove, Illinois. In 2021, the AAH system had 26 hospitals and more than 500 sites of care, with 75,000 employees, including 10,000 employed physicians. The health system was formed as a result of a merger between Illinois-based Advocate Health Care and Wisconsin-based Aurora Health Care in 2018.
In May 2022, Advocate Aurora Health agreed to merge with Atrium Health, assuming the Advocate brand, but based at Atrium Health's headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. The merger was approved by the Advocate Aurora Health and Atrium Health Boards of Directors, subject to regulatory review. The combined organization will be called Advocate Health and will be headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a strong presence in Chicago and Milwaukee. The Advocate Health Care, Atrium Health, and Aurora Health Care brands will continue to be used in their respective local communities.
The board of directors of the combined organization will comprise an equal number of members from Advocate Aurora and Atrium Health. Thomas C. Nelson, chair of Atrium Health's board of directors, will chair the new organization's board until December 31, 2023. Michele Richardson, chair of Advocate Aurora's board of directors, will then assume leadership for the immediately succeeding two-year term. Skogsbergh and Woods will serve as co-CEOs for the first 18 months, after which Skogsbergh will retire and Woods will become the sole CEO.
The merger will result in a combined company operating in six states: Illinois, Wisconsin, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. It will have 67 hospitals and 1,000 sites of care, with over 21,000 physicians and nearly 42,000 nurses. The combined company will be the fifth-largest hospital system in the country, serving nearly 6 million patients annually. It will have revenues of more than $27 billion and will deliver nearly $5 billion in annual community benefit.
The combined organization will focus on redefining how, when, and where care is delivered to best meet patients' needs. It will aim to bring medical innovations to patients more quickly, address health inequities, advance population health, enable career advancement, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. The deal will not affect Atrium Health's new medical school, Wake Forest School of Medicine, which will be the academic core of the newly combined company.
