The Harris County Hospital District was created by a voter referendum on November 20, 1965, and was formally designated as a political subdivision with taxing authority on January 1, 1966. The Memorial Hermann Health System is the largest not-for-profit health system in southeast Texas. It was formed in the late 1900s when the Memorial and Hermann systems joined. The Memorial Hospital System was started in 1907 by The Rev. and the Hermann system was started by a prominent local businessman, George H.
