The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) was created in 2013 and is the central coordinating agency, providing support, care, advocacy, and services to veterans and their families. The U.S. is divided into 18 Veterans Integrated Service Networks, or VISNs, which are regional systems of care working together to better meet local healthcare needs and provide greater access to care. Michigan is part of VISN 12, also known as the VA Great Lakes Health Care System, which also includes Illinois, Wisconsin, and northwestern Indiana, as well as portions of Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, and Missouri.
VISNs are systems within each network headed by medical centers and hierarchically within each system by division level of care or type. There are currently 170 VA Medical Centers and approximately 1,193 community-based outpatient clinics in the US. Michigan is home to a large veteran community, and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) provides support, care, advocacy, and services to veterans and their families. The state has 25 facilities offering VA healthcare, including 15 Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), five outpatient clinics, and five major medical facilities.
Veterans who meet the basic service and discharge requirements and were exposed to toxins and other hazards while serving are eligible for VA health benefits. This includes veterans who served in the Vietnam War, Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other combat zone after 9/11. To apply for VA health benefits, veterans must submit a 10-10EZ form online, by phone, in person, or by mail. A DD-214 form is also required. Once the application is processed, the VA will send a letter informing the veteran of their Priority Group assignment and copay status. Most veterans will remain enrolled without further action. However, certain veterans must provide income information to determine their priority level and will need to complete the VA Form 10-10EZ annually for re-enrollment.
Veterans who served in the active military, naval, or air service and did not receive a dishonorable discharge are also eligible for VA health benefits. They must have served 24 continuous months or the full period for which they were called to active duty. There are exceptions to this minimum duty requirement, such as being discharged due to a disability caused or worsened by active-duty service or being discharged for a hardship.
Reservists and guardsmen who were ordered to active federal service and completed their tour of duty may also be eligible for VA health benefits. Additionally, veterans separating from service due to a service-connected illness or injury may qualify for VA health care and TRICARE benefits. OEF/OIF/OND combat veterans can receive free medical care for any condition related to their service in Iraq or Afghanistan for 10 years after discharge.
