Travel benefits and reimbursements
If you're travelling for VA-approved care, you may be eligible for reimbursement for the cost of using regular transportation, including cars, planes, trains, buses, taxis, rideshares, or light rail. You may also be eligible for repayment when using ambulances, wheelchair vans, or ambulettes (non-emergency medical transportation). This is known as beneficiary travel, which includes round-trip transportation from your home to the medical centre, mileage reimbursement, or special mode transport.
To be eligible for reimbursement, you must file within 30 days of the appointment or when you become eligible. You will need to file a new claim for each appointment, and you can do this online, by mail, or in person at the VA facility where you received care. To file a claim, you will need to fill out a Veteran/Beneficiary Claim for Reimbursement of Travel Expenses (VA Form 10-3542).
You are eligible for reimbursement whether or not you volunteer on the same day as your appointment. However, you will need to establish an official place of residence to determine your reimbursement amount, and you may be asked to provide documentation to confirm your address. If you change your address while receiving care, you will be reimbursed for your return trip home. The reimbursement amount will be based on the distance between your new home and the VA health facility closest to your new home that could have provided the care you needed.
For unscheduled appointments, you may be reimbursed for one-way travel if you are a veteran and not an employee. You may also be eligible for reimbursement if you are a non-service-connected veteran with a low income or a service-connected veteran with income below the VA national income limit for healthcare benefits and prescriptions.
