The hospital's history dates back to Thanksgiving Day 1901 when Len G. Broughton M.D., the pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church, established a small infirmary as a new program for his church. Starting from a rented house with only five beds and Broughton as the sole doctor, the infirmary quickly expanded. By 1910, it had grown into a hospital with 75 beds, a staff of physicians and surgeons, and its own building on Luckie Street, adjacent to the Tabernacle. Broughton also established a Nurse Training School associated with the hospital. However, when Broughton left Atlanta for London in 1912, the hospital faced some challenges.
In 1921, the hospital purchased the former Levi B. Nelson home site at Boulevard and East Avenue, which had been destroyed in the Great Atlanta fire of 1917. This new location east of downtown Atlanta became the hospital's present site. Over the years, the hospital underwent expansions and additions, including a building program in 1948 and the introduction of office space for medical professionals in 1956. In 1981, an air ambulance service via heliport was initiated.
On September 5, 1997, Georgia Baptist Hospital was sold to Tenet Healthcare and renamed Atlanta Medical Center. In March 2016, the hospital was acquired by Wellstar Health System, along with four other Atlanta-area hospitals. Under the management of Wellstar Health System, the hospital continued to provide comprehensive medical services to the Atlanta community.
