The first 380 children were admitted to Christ's Hospital after King Edward VI signed the Royal Charter founding Christ's, St Thomas's, and Bridewell Hospitals. The hospital was given charge over licensing Cars and Carts in the City of London, a privilege that lasted until 1838. The Amicable Society of Blues, the oldest dining club in the world still in existence, was formed during this early period. Unfortunately, the original London buildings were destroyed in the Great Fire of London, but all the children survived.
The Royal Mathematical School (RMS) was given its Royal Charter by King Charles II, and Samuel Pepys, instrumental in the early development of the RMS, was made a Governor of Christ's Hospital.
