Meadville Medical Center (MMC) was formed in 1984 when financial strain brought together two hospitals that had been operating independently for almost a century: Spencer Hospital and City Hospital. As a result of this merger, City Hospital became known as MMC's Liberty Street facility, while Spencer Hospital became the Grove Street facility.
The history of these two hospitals dates back to the late 19th century. City Hospital was founded in 1881 after a group of concerned citizens came together to address the growing city's health disparities. The hospital was first located on Randolph Street but quickly became inadequate. In 1886, local philanthropist Alfred Huidekoper purchased three acres at the corner of Liberty Street and Randolph Street and donated the land to the city for the construction of a new hospital. The new hospital, a large brick and mason structure, was completed in 1887.
Spencer Hospital, on the other hand, was established on Grove Street by Joseph, with a mission to serve not only the local orphaned children but also the sick and injured of all ages, as Meadville lacked a hospital at the time. A formal nurse training program was established at the hospital in 1902.
Since its formation in 1984, MMC has continued to expand its services and presence in the community. In 1992, the Meadville Medical Center Foundation was established to assist with this growth and further its mission based on the identified needs of the region. With the Foundation's help, MMC opened the Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute in 2008, providing cancer services that previously required out-of-town travel. In 2016, MMC opened Vernon Place, a $30 million, 87,000-square-foot facility offering a range of health services, including occupational health, outpatient therapy, sports medicine, and imaging services.

This acquisition united the county's two acute care hospitals under one health system.
