West Penn Hospital is a Pittsburgh-based network formed through the merger of West Penn Hospital and the Pittsburgh-area assets of the Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation. The merger occurred in 1999, following the collapse of AHERF. The health system struggled to maintain its market share in Allegheny County and beyond.
The Western Pennsylvania Hospital was incorporated in 1848 following three years of organizational meetings of Pittsburgh area citizens who wanted to establish a facility to provide healthcare for the "reception and relief of lunatics, and the infirm, helpless, and sick poor". It was the first public hospital chartered in Pittsburgh. The hospital admitted its first patients in March 1853. During the early years, patients with both mental and physical illnesses were treated in the same facility.
In 1859, under the guidance of Dorothea Dix, a separate hospital facility was planned outside of the city limits on a 400-acre tract of land in Kilbuck Township. The facility opened in 1862 and the surrounding area was named Dixmont, in honour of Ms. Dix. The Western Pennsylvania Hospital managed these two healthcare facilities and was also responsible for the management of a philanthropic program, known as the "Brewer Fund".
By the late 19th century, the facility housed between 1,200 and 1,500 patients. In 1907, the facility became independent of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital and was renamed the Dixmont Hospital for the Insane. The site was demolished in 2006 to make way for commercial development.
